I am not aware of any way that humans living on Mars can pay the costs of keeping themselves alive there. Musk’s Mars colony is a fantasy, based on cost estimates with no basis in reality.
So far, SpaceX has been awarded a large contract to build rockets that will go to the Moon. Let’s see if they can do that successfully before we get serious about sending humans to Mars.
I think it is far from certain that the US Congress will continue to vote to spend enough money to maintain a human presence on the Moon. A human presence on Mars would be much more expensive than that.

Musk has given himself till 2050 to build a self-sufficient Mars city housing a million people. In that year, Musk would become 79 years old.
It appears improbable that SpaceX would launch the first cargo ships this year given that it hasn’t even conducted its first orbital mission with the Starship. It may be more likely that Musk will reach his target if SpaceX modifies its plans to a more feasible timeframe of the late 2020s.
