I work in Silicon Valley (San Jose, CA), and many of the so-called “rich” people hang out at Santana Row. It’s a small community if you will made up of luxury apartments, nice restaurants, and expensive shops.

Not just necessarily the rich hang out there. It’s open to anyone, but you have to have some money to live, shop, and even eat there.

Wealthy people get groceries and coffee like anybody else. The restaurants they go to are open to the public. Of course, they’re not going to travel far for these sorts of things so there’s a natural boundary to their “usual hangouts.

” But the average wealth of all people in these spots is pretty much the average for the surrounding area.

If you want to raise that bar, you’re talking about exclusive spaces like these (the Pacific Union Club and the Bohemian Club):

These sorts of clubs, along with civic groups like the Rotary, seem to be having recruitment challenges so perhaps the center of public social life will move. Luckily, Santana Row is not on the list.

The tech culture rewards getting stuff done so there’s little tolerance for hanging out to display your wealth among them. And yet, the private club’s value is still high; Starbucks as a third space has distinct limits.
